Most of us came to low carb when we were at the end of our rope.

I really didn't believe it would work at all. Some friends of mine were lcing and having great results so I thought I'd give it a try.

I lose weight very slowly so didn't have the amazing losses my friends did but it was pretty steady. A couple of cautions I learned from experience:

You might think that if 20g carbs per day yield weight loss, 10g would be even better. NO WAY! You need at least 20g per day to keep losing. Too few carbs makes your body think you are in the midst of famine and it holds on to every single ounce of fat so you won't starve to death!

We have all be so indoctrinated that low fat is better that it is easy to think you should cut fat too. DON'T DO IT! Your body needs the fat to give to energy to BURN fat. Eat the "approved" foods in whatever quantity you need to not be hungry, and eat plenty of fat!

Follow which ever plan you are doing, exactly, in the beginning. The best thing about this Way Of Eating (WOE)is that your appetite will diminish without your being hungry. You may have to tweak the plan to fit your lifestyle and preferences but don't start tweaking until you have tried sticking to it for 6 months at least.

Drink LOTS of water. At least 80oz per day.

It is normal to lose weight in spurts. You may lose for 3 or 4 weeks steadily and then suddenly stop. THIS IS NORMAL. Your body needs time to adjust to the new smaller size. Don't panic, just keep sticking with the plan and you will start losing again. Many people refer to these plateaus as "stalls". It is not truly a "stall" unless you have not lost EITHER pounds or inches for 6 weeks!

Measure yourself weekly. There will be times when the scale doesn't budge but you continue to lose inches. This is GOOD! You are building muscle and muscle weighs more than fat. It is much more compact than fat, however, hence the decreasing inches.

Using some type of record keeping system is very helpful. Many people use FitDay which is a free internet based system http://www.fitday.com/. I like Weight Commander which is one of the sponsors of this site. http://www.weightcommander.com/lj.html. Whatever system you choose, stick with it and you will be able to "see" the results.
